$How much does it *ACTUALLY* cost to live and travel full time in a truck camper? Our video from our first month of expenses sparked a lot of conversation - and also forced us to take a closer look at some of our spending habits - so we’re back with another monthly cost breakdown! We often see other van/RV life creators detailing their expenses and making it seem like this lifestyle can cost $1800 (even for two people) but those videos have us scratching our heads… where are the phone bills? The medical expenses? The other “life” expenses and “accidents happen” costs? We include EVERYTHING in our breakdown. In the month of May, we spent about 5 days wrapping up our time in California before crossing into Oregon. We spent over two weeks in Bend before rounding out the month on the Oregon coast, driving a total of 1300+ miles. WHERE WE SAVED: Gas - significantly cheaper than last month, because we drove less and gas was cheaper in Bend. Groceries - we made a lot more budget-friendly meals and dialed in our grocery strategy, BUT we did eat out more. Camper maintenance - a fraction of last month’s costs, because nothing broke, we just needed a few odds n’ ends Campgrounds - between all of the free BLM land available in Oregon to maximizing our @thousandtrails membership, we saved quite a bit here. WHERE WE SPENT MORE: Dining out & coffee shops - oops, the food in Bend was just too good, and we HAD to get some fish n’ chips on the coast. Staying in one location for a longer period of time has us spending more on eating out because we wanted to explore. Shopping - I could have shaved off $300 here if I hadn’t dropped my phone in the river. Accidents happen! Medical expenses - We actually forgot to include Meg’s premium in last month’s expenses, but this category alone takes up about 1/4 of our entire monthly expenses. That’s INSANE, but no fault of our own. Car registration - this is a one-time fee, but it just so happened to be due soon. This one hurt a bit. Overall, this is still just about $3k per person, so to be seeing and doing as much as we are with that amount of money - we think we’re doing just fine! #vanlife #budget #$

Trinidad, CA was a hidden gem!

We were zig-zagging all over California hitting national parks and other beautiful parts of the state. We had just left Redwoods National Park and were driving south before heading inland to visit Lassen Volcanic National Park and decided to stay in Trinidad, CA.

First, we spent a night at the northbound rest stop in Trinidad and it was fabulous. It didn’t even feel like a rest stop at all, with a nice bathroom, a pet area, and lots of trees shielding us from the road. We found this spot on @ioverlander.

Then we stayed at @camptrinidad_ for a couple of nights and I was obsessed with this place. Up until this point we had mostly stayed at state park campgrounds and rest stops, but this was such a welcome treat. The entire property is so adorable, it’s in a quiet neighborhood lined with inns and other RV parks, and it’s a mile down the road from Sue-Meg State Park, where we did some trail running and exploring.

Camp Trinidad had a small store with some higher-end snacks, free coffee, and firewood, plus a hot tub, corn hole, a kid’s play area, and a dog park. There were community fire pits and a fish cleaning station. Our spot was #8 which, in my opinion, was the best spot at the campground. There were tent spots, RV hookups, cabins, and an inn on the property. @megtrekking found this place through @hipcamp!
